Police have arrested two men after they allegedly stole a taxi resulting in a car chase in Sydney’s north-west yesterday.

At about 5am on Monday, a taxi carrying two passengers stopped to pick up a third person on Bettington Road, Oatlands.

The driver got out of the vehicle to get some fresh air while the third passenger got in.

As soon as the three people were inside, one of the original passengers got behind the wheel and drove off leaving the taxi driver behind.

Police were called and pursued the stolen car before the taxi suffered a minor collision at Toongabbie. The passengers, aged 16 and 18, got out of the car and were arrested soon after.

Both men were taken to Parramatta Police Station. One was charged with vehicle theft and driving without a licence while the other was charged with criminal negligence.

The 18-year-old was refused bail and will appear at Parramatta Local Court on Monday 17 August. The 16-year-old was granted conditional bail and will appear at a Children’s Court on Monday 14 September.

Anyone with information on the third man’s location are to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
